The following steps are a simple way to format a document with a Contents page, and stepped in Headings with your own formatting. The Contents page will be created automatically by Word, so that when the document has been edited, it is easy to update.

1.      Start off by typing the headings for your document.

Type them in normal text to start with, so they may look like the following:

Introduction

The Rules

The Ref

Who is he

How much is he paid

The ball

2.      Next step is to set the “Style” of each heading.

Therefore browse through selecting each heading in turn and, using the Style pull down at the top left allocate a suitable Heading type for each of your headings. It may then look like the following:

1         Introduction

2         The Rules

3         The Ref

3.1    Who is he

3.2    How much is he paid

3.3    The ball

Note: If the numbering does not appear automatically, then click on the Format | Bullets and Numbering and Click on “Outline Numbered”.  Choose the appropriate numbering from the selection available.

3.      Once the headings are done, you can type in the text for each section. As follows:

1         Introduction

This document will introduce the game of rugby, and tell you what you need to know to win the World Cup in 1999.

2         The Rules

There are certain rules, which if broken, may result in you being Yellow carded and/or sent off. It is best to break these rules up to the point where you don’t get caught. The best time is at the bottom of a ruck or on the opposite side of the scrum from the referee.

3         The Ref

3.1    Who is he

This guy is there to antagonise the players as much as possible. The team most likely to feel hard done by will normally be the team who loses the game. Therefore if you want to be happy with the Ref, then you must win the game.

3.2    How much is he paid

Normally a gold watch and 4 star accommodation will do, however, if you are not the home team, this may be difficult.

3.3    The ball

Specially designed to bounce away from the losing team.

4.      Last step is to create the Contents page. You do this by the following steps:

a)       Move the cursor to the place in the document where you want it to appear. This is normally at the beginning or on the first page inside the front cover.

b)       Choose from the main menu: Insert | Field and select “TOC” from the Field Names section. Refer below for example dialogue box.

c)       Click OK.

d)       At the beginning of the contents section, type in “Contents”, press TAB and type in “Page” at the start of the Contents section. This can be on the line immediately before the “TOC” Field you have just inserted.

e)       Select the Contents line and apply suitable fonts in the normal way. E.g. Bold, Type and adjust size.

f)        Select the actual contents lines (the “TOC” Field) and apply suitable fonts in the normal way. This allows you to make the Contents heading a different size to the actual contents.

The following page shows an example of how your document will look.

Note: To update the Contents section, when you have edited and changed your document, place the mouse over the area, press Right Click, and choose “Update Field”. You can then choose to update page numbers or the complete document.
